Employee Spotlight: Get to Know Abs King
What is your current role?
My role is Principal Experience Inventor which means that I work across the UX spectrum from research to design, collaborate with engineers and product owners, learn from users to imagine the future. I’m also working to grow our design practice and UX team here at Uplift.
How long have you worked at Uplift Delivery?
About 6 months
What did you do before you worked in UX Design?
Before I started working full time in UX, I was an Assistant Professor of Technical Communication at Texas Tech University where I focused on topics like communication history, information design, and theories of language. I also got to be the director of a usability research lab which was my path into a full time UX role.
What got you interested in UX Design? I was introduced to UX by one of my dearest friends, Marieke, who has been in this industry for about 15 years. When she started working in UX as a researcher, I was in grad school learning about research. Over time our work interests got closer and more related. I also got to see and admire her work experiences, the kind of impact she was able to make, and the ways that she interpreted the world through a user-centered view. Her work continues to be a career inspiration for me.
What brought you to Uplift?
I had the good luck to work with a number of people currently at Uplift while I was in a prior UX role at a much larger company. I was excited to get to work with these wonderful people again and about the idea of working to grow a tiny but mighty team together.
What does your day to day look like in your current role?
Right now I’m on a client project where I’m contributing to the definition of an MVP product in the smart/connected experiences space. I am wireframing some key flows that will help bring the MVP closer to reality. This is a fun because I’m doing a few different UX tasks at the same time – sometimes more research, sometimes more design.
What is the best career lesson you have learned so far?
Careers don’t have to be linear – changes in industry and role have let me learn a lot and work with great people.
Fun fact about yourself:
I am currently studying math, starting with Algebra. It’s always been a weak spot in my learning so I’m tackling it!
