What is your role?
Associate Director of Engineering in Chicago
How long have you worked at Uplift Delivery?
1 year (this month!!) and have 7-and-a-half years of experience in software development.
What did you do before you worked at Uplift?
Before Uplift I worked at a few different software consultancies in Detroit and Chicago
What brought you to Uplift?
I had the privilege of working with a bunch of extremely smart (and funny) people earlier in my career. When Kelley approached me to come work at Uplift, a whole bunch of those familiar names were already working here – the people are what make work fun and interesting and make the job great.
What does your day to day look like in your current role?
It depends on the project and the current needs of the organization and client, but most of my time is spent doing architecture and development work on a team with other Uplift and client engineers.
What are the trends in technology that you are seeing right now that are of interest to you?
The Web3 concepts (blockchain/decentralization) are pretty interesting to me. We are in an interesting spot at the moment where most people nowadays have heard about some of the implementations of that technology like cryptocurrency and NFTs, but software organizations are still trying to figure out additional uses for what is a pretty new paradigm. I am particularly interested in the implementation of DAO’s and self-sovereign identity, and seeing how those ideas shape the internet as a whole.
What is the best career lesson you have learned so far?
When I first started as a software engineer, I thought that as I progressed I would eventually reach the point where I would know the answers to most problems, and I viewed the ‘goal’ as getting to the point where you know everything. As you progress through your career in software, you are naturally looked at as someone who can solve more complex problems, lead teams, etc. The reality is that nobody is going to know everything so the most important skill is being able to figure things out. You need to rely on your previous experience to know what technology to apply and where the anti-patterns exist, and lean on the people around you to fill in gaps in your knowledge.
What are your hobbies?
Oh man, this is a hard one. I enjoy building and fixing things (part of the reason I got into software in the first place), so it carries over into my free time a bit – I spend a lot of time doing construction/home improvement and also doing my own car repairs. On the tech side, keeping up with what is going on in the Web3 space is something I like to do on the weekends. Since I live in Chicago, I really enjoy going to explore the different neighborhoods in the city – going to street fairs and finding those ‘hidden gem’ restaurants and bars.
Fun fact about yourself:
I have two cats: Loki and Gandolf, and a Chocolate Lab: Kona
